Costs and ratios for School Visits

From 2015 our costs are:

Full day visit. Normally 10.00am to 2.15pm is £9 per child for secondary schools and £8.50 per child for primary schools. Longer days are charged accordingly but would normally be £11 per child. Small groups need to be aware that there is a minimum charge per day but do contact us to discuss.

Half day visits in the morning (normally 10-12) are priced at £5 per child for infant school age (reception, Year 1 & Year 2) or £4 per child for pre-school age. Schools which book for half a day are more than welcome to stay and have a packed lunch at the farm if they wish. Half day visits in the afternoons (normally 12.15-2.15) are priced at £4 per child to reflect the fact that afternoons are often less convenient for schools. Schools that visit in the afternoon are able to start with a packed lunch at the Manor site before the visit commences. Evening visits by Brownies, Cubs etc. are charged at £4.50 per child or on a group basis for small groups. For all the above there is no cost for teaching staff or adult helpers unless a standard pupil: staff ratio is exceeded (see below).

Pupil: Staff ratios

We always endeavour to split school groups into smaller groups of 15 or less students who are led by a qualified member of Rushall Farm staff. We find that these smaller groups really aid the learning process.

We recommend a school Pupil: Staff ratio of

Children Adults
Pre-School groups 2 1
Foundation (Reception) 4 1
Key Stage 1 6 1
Key Stage 2 10 1
Key Stage 3 and 4 15 1

Whilst farm staff are not generally included in these ratios it is worth noting that on occasion their presence can be included in the ratio i.e. on a KS2 visit each group of 15 students will have both a school and farm member of staff with them. With pre-school groups it is often the case that many parents like to attend the day, over and above the recommended ratio. This is absolutely fine and we’d charge the additional adults at the same rate as children (£4 per person).

Children on Free School Meals

In the past we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to provide free visits for pupils on free school meals. Sadly from the beginning of 2014 we are not in a position to be able to do that however the Pupil Premium should more than adequately cover this change.
