My youngest daughter lives in Manchester on the 7th floor of a block of apartments by one of the many canals. I was walking the other evening along one of the towpaths when three wild Collie crosses appeared through a bridge, chasing a couple of geese who were grazing peacefully before settling down for the night. Moments later a rough barge followed, stacked with freshly cut wood on its roof and towing a small dinghy behind. The man on the tiller briefly made contact with the bank, commanded his dogs to embark and carried on to the next lock. My heart lifted. Amidst all the people jogging to keep fit, walking home listening to their iPods, or talking or texting on their phones, here was real country life hitting the city. I stopped to help him go through the lock. We lifted the paddles, opened the gates, watched the rush of water as his boat descended a good ten feet. We had to clear the rubbish to open the second gates. Then I bid him on his way. Only two more locks before it was time for him to stop, have tea and retire to bed exhausted. As we had worked together he had told me that he wasn’t always dressed so rough, was hoping to get a tidier boat and had a girlfriend in a posh flat, though she wasn’t over keen on his dogs. He didn’t realise he was special and unique because who he was, with his scruffy barge and three dogs. Psalm 23 says;
The LORD is my shepherd;I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
